The Importance of the Daily First Meal

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day; yet it is the one meal that most people skip. According to health experts, missing breakfast is one of biggest nutritional mistakes you will ever make. Why is this so? Because a proper breakfast provides a host of benefits that the other meals don’t.

Eating an appropriate first meal for the day will enable you to perform better in the workplace, in school or in the work environment because it will keep you alert and will provide you with enough energy until lunchtime. Thus, you will not feel tired or sleepy in the mid-morning hours. Some people say that eating breakfast makes them hungrier. This is only true if the breakfast eaten is not balanced. This important meal should consist of protein, carbohydrates, fiber and a little fat – this combination will make you full and sustain you until midday.

In addition, a full stomach in the morning is a good way of jumpstarting your metabolism and keeping it running throughout the day. The calories that you consume during breakfast are more efficiently used by your body than those that you consume during dinner. Thus, you will not feel the urge to snack in between meals. This explains why people who are trying to lose weight are advised to eat a healthy breakfast. A sluggish metabolism makes it hard for the body to burn calories.

Some people make the mistake of eating a breakfast consisting only of carbohydrates, which is not the proper way of starting the day. With only carbohydrates in your system, your blood sugar level will increase drastically; however, this spike in blood sugar is only temporary. When the level drops, you will feel very hungry and will tend to eat anything, even unhealthy food. For example, never eat a bagel or a donut or an apple alone. You can pair these with yogurt, peanut butter or low fat cheese. Give your body a variety of nutrients that it can utilize as fuel. Better yet, drink a glass of smoothie for breakfast.
