Smoothie Equipment Requirements

A smoothie is a combination of solid and liquid ingredients. In order to mix them properly, you will need the right equipment. Blenders are the most commonly used pieces of equipment when making smoothies but it is important to choose the right one.

Smoothie-making requires certain processes such as liquefying, pureeing, chopping, mixing and even grinding, if a certain ingredient calls for it. Your blender must be capable of doing all these. Applying the right method ensures that you will always get the maximum amount of nutrients and the best taste from your glass of smoothie.

Choosing the right blender is not a difficult task and you need not choose a very expensive one. What matters is to beable to select the best one for your needs. Remember that it is not the blender that provides the health benefits to asmoothie but the ingredients that you put into it. However, there are certain features that you need to consider in a blender if you are going to use it regularly for mixing your daily health drink.

  • Base. The blender must have a sturdy base and wide enough to prevent vibration while blending at high speeds. Bases can be made from metal or plastic. A metal base is a good choice because it is more durable, heavier and  is more stable.
  • Wattage. The blender should have enough power or wattage. For personal use, wattage of 500 is preferred but 350 watts is also sufficient. Blenders that do not have enough power have to function with high revolutions per minute or rpm. When the ingredients are added and the power is inadequate, the rpm will decrease significantly. For example, when you put ice cubes in your smoothie and the power is low, then the decreased rpm will not be enough to crush the ice properly; and you will end up with big chunks in your smoothie. With a high wattage, the blade speed will be maintained even if you mix in hard ingredients.
  • Speed Setting. Speed settings are diverse, depending on the brand. Some simply have a high and low setting and others have several. You do not need to buy one with multiple speeds although the various speeds will enable you to achieve different textures with a variety of ingredients. A feature to look out for is the pulse button. This button enables you to have quick pulses of power during processing.
  • Container. Most containers are made of glass, plastic or metal and each has its own pros and cons. Plastic is lightweight and does not break easily in case you drop it; but it is more prone to scratches and absorbs the odor of the ingredients that are put in. This will require more cleaning on your part to eliminate the unwanted smells. Glass, on the other hand, is not as difficult to clean since it does not soak up any odor. However, it is heavy and will certainly break when dropped or bumped against a hard surface. Metals are lighter than glass but its drawback is that it can be dented.
