Benefits of Pineapples

Pineapple has a distinct taste that makes it a favorite ingredient of smoothie lovers. In addition to the taste, it is also an excellent source of nutrition. A pineapple is a very juicy fruit and has a very high liquid content. This must be taken into consideration when combined in a smoothie.

Pineapple is chock full of Vitamin C that just a cup is enough to fulfill your daily requirement for this vitamin. Enzymes are also abundant in pineapples and one of the most essential ones is bromelain, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Selection and Storage

Being such a popular fruit, pineapples can be found in a variety of forms: fresh, dried, frozen or canned. Its juice is sold as concentrate or in cans. Among these, fresh is best but you can still certainly make use of the others in preparing your smoothie. You can even utilize dried pineapples to sweeten your drink, as long as you make sure to have the unsweetened kind.

Selecting fresh pineapples for your smoothie is easy. Choose one that is fragrant and sweet. It should be plump, feel heavy and have a sweet pineapple aroma. If the aroma is too strong, then it could be overripe. The color could either be green or yellow gold and the eyes bright, shiny and flat. Avoid those that look old and wrinkly. Dark eyes and yellowed leaves indicate that the fruit is not fresh anymore. The leaves should be green and when these pull off easily, the pineapple is fully ripe. Fresh pineapple perishes quickly and should be consumed within two days. It can also bruise easily despite its thick skin. If you leave it out on the counter at room temperature, it will increase acidity but not ripen anymore because the ripening process stops as soon as the fruit is picked.

Once you have trimmed and cut the pineapple and plan on storing it, cover it with juice in an airtight container and refrigerate. This will stay well for five to seven days. If you want to freeze it, place the sliced fruit in airtight plastic bags with its natural juice and store in the freezer. You can freeze pineapples up to 6 months.

Canned pineapple can be stored up to one year on the shelf in a cool, dry cabinet. Leftover canned pineapple should be refrigerated in its juice in a covered container and consumed within one week.
