Weight watchers do not have to worry when making mangoes a part of their diet. It is low in carbohydrates and calories. The best thing is that it contains less than 1 gram of fat. Further, it aids in digestion due to the amount of fiber that it has. One piece already has fifty percent of the daily fiber requirement for an adult person. Sufficient fiber in the body helps to prevent constipation and diarrhea, and normalizes bowel movement.

Selection and Storage

Unlike the pineapple, mangoes will continue to ripen even after being picked from the tree. So you can buy those that are still in the green stage and let them ripen in your kitchen counter. However, if you happen to come across some very good ripe ones in the market, then by all means, buy them for your smoothies

A good ripe mango is firm to the touch but will give slightly to the pressure of your finger. Some varieties turn rich red with yellow, orange and green colors present, while others are completely yellow. Never select mangoes that have dark spots or cuts in the skin and have sunken portions. Further, try to smell the fruit. The aroma of a ripe mango will be distinctive and has been described as a mixture of pineapple, melon and berries.

Mangos are available in fresh, canned, and dried forms. Soak dried mangoes in liquid for four hours before mixing them in a smoothie or any other recipe. You can store fresh mangoes in the refrigerator for two or three days. To freeze, peel, seed and chop the flesh and seal in an airtight container. Be sure to leave a half-inch of air space in the freezer bag and squeeze out as much air as you can. An alternative way of freezing is to sprinkle the chopped pieces with sugar and letting this dissolve, before freezing. Mangoes that are stored in this way will keep for six months.
