10 Oh-so-right Smoothies as Perfect Family Desserts

We all know that eating fruits and vegetables are as essential as eating three times a day. For me, getting my children to eat fruits and vegetables is a feat in itself – they would run away and hie-off to Alaska if they can, but they will not eat them as is. But with fruit and vegetable smoothie recipes, I am assured that although I don’t see them eating, at least I can see them drinking something I know that’s healthy and nutritious.

If you’re in the same dilemma as I was, then you’re in luck, since you’re reading this. Fruits are much easier to give children because of their natural sweetness (or sourness, depending on the fruit). Vegetables are another matter. So here are some vegetable smoothies to help you out. If you will notice, fruits are usually added because as we said, of their natural sweetness. This is to eliminate the need to use sugar.

1Most kids (and adults too) love sweet things. Try this combination of fruits and veggies. Blend ½ cup of sliced carrots, ½ cup of cucumber, 1 cup of apple juice, 1 cup of sliced sweet apples, ¼ cup of applesauce, 2 cups of ice and a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon (for a great fragrance).

2Broccoli is one of the most hated vegetables of all time. (Trust me, even I hated it as a kid.) Blend 1 chopped carrot, 4 florets of broccoli, 2 handfuls of spinach, 1 chopped apple and 2 peeled and quartered oranges (both fruits for added sugar), and a cup of orange juice to dilute. Blend until smooth.

3Carrots are good for the eyes, which is why this is perfect for the whole family – for the kids with developing eyes and for the adults with getting-old eyes. Blend 2 cups of carrot juice (or a cup of carrot and a cup of carrot juice), ½ cup of apple juice, 6 oz. non-fat vanilla or plain frozen yoghurt and 1 banana. Blend until smooth.

4Tomatoes are known for its antioxidant properties. For men, it is also good to take for prevention of prostate cancer. For women, it is said to better the skin. Blend 2 cups of chopped tomatoes (fresh tomatoes are best to maximize optimum health benefits), ½ cup of tomato juice, ¼ cup of apple juice, ½ cup of carrots, ¼ cup of celery, a dash of Tabasco or hot sauce for a little kick, and 2 cups of ice. Serve immediately.

5I never knew that cucumbers and tomatoes can go well together, until I tried this smoothie. Blend ½ small chopped cucumber, ½ cup tomato juice, ½ teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, 2 drops of Tabasco sauce, 4 ice cubes. Blend until the ice is crushed and serve immediately.

6I’ve always eaten raw vegetables for a time. If you’re into that too, then this recipe is perfect for you. Pour liquid ingredients into blender (2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, 4 tablespoons picante salsa). Add the remaining ingredients – 1 cup of raw broccoli (I blanche it first though), 1 raw tomato, ½ raw carrot (cut into pieces), 1 cup of any leafy green vegetable (kale or a spinach would do), 1 clove of raw garlic, ½ cup of raw hulled sunflower seeds, ½ cup raw un-hulled sesame seeds and 1 onion. Blend until creamy.

7Pour a cup of apple juice in the blender. Add the chopped spinach; process it until well blended. Add a cup of carrots and 1 banana and blend well. Add ice cubes and some more juice as you deem necessary. Blend until smooth.

8Carrot smoothie with a twist. Ingredients are 1 mango (peeled, seeded and chopped), 2 bananas (peeled), 8 large strawberries, 2 medium carrots (chopped), 2 cups of ice cubes, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1 cup of yoghurt. Combine each ingredient and blend until smooth. Serve immediately. Good for 2 servings.

9Aside from broccoli, celery was my next least favorite vegetable. I realized though that if you blend 3 sticks of celery, a medium carton of apple juice, 6 strawberries and 1 strawberry yoghurt, celery suddenly becomes delicious.

10Blend 2 tomatoes (chop first then freeze it), 1 cup of tomato juice, juice of ½ of a lemon, and 3 basil leaves. Mix until smooth and serve.

You can try to experiment on other vegetables as well, but the 10 recipes mentioned are tried-and-tested by our family. So go ahead, push that button, blend and enjoy!
